- The p orbitals that are being attacked are perpendicular to the sp2 orbitals, so that's why the attack is from above/below (barbell shape)
- At 9:39, wouldn't it be more proper to say that the strong acid deprotonates in water to turn H2O into H3O+? He did say that that reaction wouldn't make anything interesting, but shouldn't the mixture of H2SO4 and H2O make it so that H3O+ is the electrophile/proton donor?
- @dtdoering no, h20 is a weak electrophile. The oxygen in the epoxide is much more likely to be protonated.
