- What's that rhyme he said?
- Why are scandium and yttrium considered as rare earths?
- I love how the views go down the further you get.
- @BigTex541 No.
- Lanthanum is also used in camera lenses, many older soviet lenses make use of it and they are excellent lenses.
- Yes. Oddly most elements are metals...
- yeh but that's to be expected of an alkali metal this is a transition metal making it far more amazing that it can be cut with a knife.
- dunno went too fast
- Lanthanum has no f electrons. I was always taught that it is a d-1 transition metal, not a lanthanide, and should always be below scandium &yttrium in the table.
- Ha! Finally someone else who gets that joke :P
- There is also a superconducting compound containing lanthanum and iron (!): LaO1-xFxFeAs. The x denotes the doping of flourine, which alters the superconducting properties.
- What was the rhyme again? Does anyone know when Lanthanum was added to the periodic table.

- Lanthanum, the slightly radioactive element.
- And also phosphates in people, especially people with kidney problems.
- Holmium (Ho) and Erbium (Er), makes Hoer (whore) in Dutch, and that how a teacher at my school lets students know the rare earth elements.
- Its used to bind phosphates in aquariums
- Haha! Thanks!
- sorry it's a rare earth metal not a transition metal. however, if the rare eath metals hadn't been first discovered when they were then they would be classified transition metals anyway.
- You con cut sodium with a knife as well.
- That mnemonic is so random it's barely easier than just remembering the list of elements! :-)
- Similar outer electronic structure - which makes for similar chemical properties.
- wondering the same...
- @Demonlogist Chuck Norris sends you a round-house kick.
- Hahaha goeie :P
- Is lanthanum a kind of metal?
- From Wikipedia: "Scandium and yttrium are considered rare earths since they tend to occur in the same ore deposits as the lanthanoids and share similar chemical properties with them."
- Languid centers play notes promises small European golden tongues dinosaurs huckalapede thrumming yellow lutes???
- no they aren't they just are put into the same group because they have the same properties as each other, and because they have the same number of valence electrons
